The first week of work (and some other stuff)

Starting out this first week of work was harder than I thought it would be, having to entertain and care for small children for 5 hours a day seemed like it would be a breeze considering I also have been occasionally babysitting my brothers for the past few years. To my surprise it was a lot harder than I thought.

For the morning shift we start out by going to play outside for an hour, making sure the kids take in enough fresh air every day, after that we take an hour teaching them various things like; counting in English, shapes and colours in English, singing songs in English and learning them the English alfabet. Then after the "lesson", they have an hour of play time and exercise, basically playing like any child should (while we try and have them be active).

At twelve is lunch, where the kids have there own table and chairs and eat their "Bento boxes" all by themselves. (see picture) During which we also eat our own lunch; which is prepared for us by our host Yumiko-San.

Then from about one to two there is another "lesson" where we teach them various thing in English.

The afternoon shift is quite different; here the small kids are still entertained by us and our fellow travellers, but there are also older kids that come in and have either a private lesson or a group lesson depending on the circumstances, or there are adults that come in for conversation training.

Then at seven when everybody has left we have dinner with all the travellers staying here and that's where our workday ends.

We do this five days a week.

On our off time Rudi and me have been exploring Sapporo and it's many shops, restaurants and bars (not going everywhere but mostly just exploring and finding out what is here). We have encountered a couple of very nice places to get some lunch or have a nice cup of coffee, like I mentioned in my last blog.

Among one was a Place called "Samurai", here we had "soup Curry" one of Sapporo's most famous dishes. Soup Curry is served in a bowl acompanied by rice. It is a thick soup containing various kinds of vegetables and meat. We could choose from a scale from one to ten how spicy we wanted the soup, Rudi and I both went for four (which was the highest we could go without having to pay extra, we are still Dutch after all), and I have to mention that I am not normally a "soup person". But this soup was so incredibly tasty that I couldn't stop eating until everything was gone. (see pictures)

That same evening we had agreed to go out to eat with some people we met at work during the day, they had invited us to go with them to a "Tabe-nomi-hodai" litteral translation meaning "eat and drink endlessly".
We had two hours to drink and eat as much as we wanted(see picture), but I have to say after we were done eating and on our way back home my mind kept going back to the Soup Curry we had for lunch.

    Opa:

Kostelijk verslag, Collin. Prachtige eerste week daar.

Hi Collin, how even personal food preferences can drastically change abroad.....-:) This may not only hold for food by the way. ..... Lovely picture of your 'pupils', how is their English getting on? best regards, Jan
