Nomification & Onsen

This week i want to talk a little bit about the drinking culture here in Japan.

After work in Japan it is very normal for the people here to go and have dinner and drinks with their co-workers. They go to places called "Izakaya", which is basically a japanese bar where you can eat and drink.
Here the pressure and stress gets released from a day of working hard. This is called: Nomification

Normally People in Japan are very quiet during the day, the subway stations and in the subway cars themselves you can only hear the sounds of the subway. You wil almost never hear people speaking. Sometimes it gets so quiet that it is even eerie.

At the "Izakaya" on the other hand Japanese people can get very loud and out of character, they are very jolly and social, but only with the people that came there with them. This is because unlike in a european bar, the "Izakaya" have a table system (sometimes even closed of with curtains) so the people here don't really mingle at the bar.

My own experience with nomification is at the hands of some japanese friends/co-workers we had here in the first few weeks. They would take us out every weekend (which is when they worked) and show us around town. all of the japanese people i have got to know here like this kind of thing, and they ALL like beer.

Now there is another thing I would like to talk about in this blog and that is "Onsen". These are Bathhouses which are built on or around natural hotsprings. These "Onsen" are a big staple in Japanese culture and almost everyone goes now and again. They work as follows, You go in, pay a small fee, you go into the lockerroom and undress, then you take a shower and wash yourself before you go into the public baths. In the public bath area there are several different kinds of baths, the hotspring of course but also a cold bath, bubblebath and a steambath and sauna (by the way, men and women have seperate area's).
After you are done with the baths you shower again and get dressed. Then in the building there is always some kind of restaurant where you can relax and have some food (and take a nap if you want).

Rudi and me did this last friday, and it was one of the most relaxing things i have done in a while. We definitely are going back!
obviously i couldn't take pictures inside so i am going to use some photo's from the website of the place we went.

Hi Collin, nomification doesn't sound very Japanese if you ask me -:) but undoubtedly it's a wonderful experience after a hard day's work... And of course you'll be visiting the 'onsen' more often for a quiet splash..... you're getting more Japanese every day...enjoy, Jan

Tijd niks van je gehoord of gelezen, Collinsan.

Wel tijd om je even te feliciteren met je 27e verjaardag. Blijf wel een beetje af van de Suntory en zo.
